What is a CMS?

In simple terms, a CMS is a piece of software that allows you to update and manage the information on your website without needing any HTML or technical knowledge. If you can use a word-processor, then you can use a CMS.

CMS's are now quite advanced and can include various levels of security, i.e. who in your organisation can edit/delete/add documents, who can view documents etc. You and other members of your organisation can be assigned a user name and password. This will allow each person different access rights to the CMS.

Why use a CMS?

The real beauty of having a CMS in place of a standard website, is that you can change pages on your site whenever you want. You don't need anyone with IT knowledge to get involved, and you don't need to ring up your web designer.

You can include weekly or daily news items about your recent projects. You can write your own articles or upload photos.

Your site always looks professional, as the structure remains constant. You don't have to worry about somebody uploading something that ruins the layout of the site, or affects the navigation, as all this is tightly controlled by those with the required access right.
